Some people swear by them. There a staple of just about any content management or blogging software system. I even had one client who wanted to reward people points for comments, and swore it was the next “it” thing for the web. Having administered 100′s of WordPress installs, I’ve grown to despise the comment system. Why?
One word – SPAM. For every legitimate comment a post would receive, ten spam posts would quickly gang tackle it and throw it out a window. Hawking everything from turning your blog into a money-maker to the ever present drug references. You would think with the plethora of plugins available to deal with spam (notably Akismet), that it would be a fairly mild issue for any blog or website. Not so. The bots and their writers have grown ever so sophisticated over time and given the right opening can bring a blog to its knees.
My solution? Turn it off!
